Alvin Gogineni’s Datsun Fairlady 2000
“I could have the worst day and once I hop into the driver’s seat, it always makes me smile.” -Alvin Gogineni Meet Alvin Gogineni’s Datsun SPL311 Roadster, a true gem from the late 1960s that has been fully restored to living, breathing, and racing conditions by Alvin and his friends at the Z Car Garage. Alvin started this project when he first purchased the Datsun back in 2000. Since then, he has swapped in an SR20DE engine from a JDM Nissan Silvia and a matching five speed transmission to effectively transform the Datsun to a worry free car (as opposed to having wait ten minutes for the fuel to mix on every cold start). Unlike many vintage car owners, Alvin isn’t afraid to daily the car: immediately after the engine swap back in 2003, Alvin commuted 100 miles every day for four months racking up 25,000 miles on the car the first year following the swap. Not only that, the Datsun served as Alvin’s primary open track car and has ventured to almost all of the Norcal Racetracks, including Laguna Seca and Thunder Hill. In addition to the engine swap, Alvin has also added a 4-link rear suspension with QA1 coilovers, disc brakes, and a limited slip axle from a Mazda RX-7. Future improvements include cabin modifications that aim to make the car as comfortable on the inside as it looks from the outside.
